Working safely on workstations for students
IT workstations for study and library research are available in a wide variety of buildings. For trouble-free and efficient work, it helps to observe the user rules.
Below are a few tips for working in public areas!
Shoulder Surfing
When entering access data such as passwords or working on confidential documents, you should keep an eye on your surroundings. Be aware if people are looking over your shoulder or even photographing or filming your keyboard or screen with a cell phone.
Protect media
Mobile data carriers should always be encrypted. On Windows systems, this can easily be done via Bitlocker. This option is also available on Android and other operating systems. Just think how small a USB stick is, or how easy it is to just leave it plugged in and forget about it! If the stick or the cell phone is not protected by encryption, all your data (e.g. passport copies for fake identity) can be copied and misused.
Screen lock
When you work in front of the screen for a long time, you occasionally need to go to the bathroom, get a book or a snack, or briefly meet someone outside the IT workroom. In these situations, it is important to lock the screen, even if you only get up for a few seconds. With Windows key + L this is done immediately and nobody can access your workspace anymore.
