MFA
Multifactor authentication (MFA) is an authentication method that combines two or more credentials (factors) for identity verification. This significantly increases the security of the login process and makes identity theft more difficult.
We recommend installing one of the following apps on your smartphone for generating one-time codes:
- FreeOTP
- Google Authenticator
- Microsoft Authenticator
- PrivacyIDEA Authenticator
If you do not have a smartphone, you can purchase an MFA hardware-token (contact our support team for details) .
How do I set up MFA?
We answer all setup questions in ASK, our digital assistant. Please use this, as the service desk is sometimes difficult to reach due to the increased support volume.
- MFA setup (setup with the support of the ASK)
- mfa-setup.uni-graz.at (link for direct setup)
- Video tutorial
I want to access my emails
- Please install MFA first of all (see also video tutorial).
- Please install"Cisco Anyconnect" (uniVPN)
- Only then start webmail, email on mobile etc.
I have changed my smartphone and need a MFA reset
You can currently only install MFA on one device. If you want to change the smartphone, for example, or have MFA reset for other reasons, an identity check is also performed for this purpose.
What do I do if I don't own a smartphone?
We are currently testing MFA tokens (still experiencing issues there). Once the bug is fixed, they will be issued (or can be purchased for a fee). Until then, please try to install MFA on an old smartphone without a SIM card, if you have such a thing available.
I am in Austria, but not on campus
- Most services are only accessible with multifactor authentication (MFA) and VPN.
- Please install MFA first of all (see also video tutorial).
- Please install"Cisco Anyconnect" (uniVPN)
- Start VPN (necessary for all devices, also for cell phones) before accessing IT services of the University of Graz. You will be asked for the One-Time-Code when starting Cisco AnyConnect (for this you need MFA)
I would like to write an exam
- For on-campus exams, you generally do not need MFA. However, if you already have MFA set up, please come a few minutes early to be on the safe side, you only need to enter the one-time code additionally. Please do not forget your smartphone then!
- Exams (e.g. OpenBook exams from home) work worldwide with MFA (except for single countries -> see "Are there countries ...")
I would like to check my e-mails on my mobile phone
- You need Cisco Anyconnect and multifactor authentication (MFA). Both must be started so that you can check your emails - see Checking emails.
- The Outlook app does not work at the moment - please use an alternative email program.
Tip: You can click on the share button on your phone e.g. at FreeOTP on the right side of the code -> "Copy to ... Clipboard" and paste it at AnyConnect by clicking longer on the empty field One-Time-Code -> "paste".
I can't install MFA, I keep getting errors
We answer all known questions about occurring errors in the ASK, our digital assistant. Please use it, as the service desk is sometimes difficult to reach due to the increased support volume.
I would like to do library research
To access library resources , establish a connection in the Cisco Anyconnect client with the profile "University library". If the profile is not displayed, you can directly enter the following link as the server address: https: //univpn.uni-graz.at/ub. With this connection, you will subsequently have access to the external library resources.
